About this place
Hamyeol Market is a traditional market in Jeollabuk-do. It began at Nagunteo in Geumseong Village near the end of the Joseon period, later moved near Hamyeol Station, and developed further in its present location during the Japanese colonial period. It was once busy with goods arriving from places such as Ganggyeong and Ungpo, and today it continues as a five-day market selling vegetables, clothing, general goods, fish, and fruit.

함열시장은 이조말 금성마을 날근터에 시장이 개설되었고, 그 후 함열역 부근에 형성되다가 일제 때 현 위치에서 본격적으로 발달하였다. 1950~1970년경까지 강경 웅포 등의 물류가 유입되어 성시를 이루웠다고 전해진다. 하지만 시내버스가 1975년경부터 운행되면서 인근 익산시에 상권이 편중되면서 함열장은 약화되어 현재는 채소류, 의류, 잡화류, 생선류, 과일류 등으로 5일장이 유지되고 있는 실정이다.
